Inspiration
In our busy lives, it's easy to turn to fast food and sugary snacks for convenience. But, these foods can lead to health problems like obesity and heart disease. That's where DEMETER comes in. Our tool allows users to simply enter the name of a food and get information on it, allowing one to track the macronutrients for their specific needs, and also give healthier options with similar taste and nutrition if the recipe is deemed to be unhealthy. We understand the importance of healthy eating and want to make it more accessible to everyone. With the power of technology, DEMETER provides a practical and easy-to-use tool that can be accessed on-the-go. We're here to help you make informed decisions about what you eat and ultimately lead a happier, healthier life.
What it does
DEMETER allows the user to input a link which contains the recipes for the food they want to prepare, then the program uses the link to display the ingredients, and overall, it prints out the nutritional facts like the amount of carbs, proteins and fat: i.e. the macros [ Short for macronutrients ]. Using the AI model in the program, it will determine whether the food ,which the user wants to prepare, would be healthy or unhealthy. If it is found to be unhealthy, then DEMETER will suggest healthy alternatives to what the user could have.
How we built it
We leverage the power of the Python programming language to design our software. We wrote a script that calculates the above data using three different APIs and a database. We used them in the form of libraries, as discussed below- OpenAI; BeautifulSoup, Requests In this case, we scrambled through three different databases to make our software comply with the user's request. We ended up curating our software in 21 man hours of coding, which resulted in 97% efficiency-based results and 0.2% room for errors provided the ingredients and servings mentioned by the user are correct and satisfy the input requirements.
Challenges
"The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it." This quote by Moliere pumped our inspiration and motivation to design and achieve our goals to the best of our capabilities. We faced significant challenges, but it became the most exciting and engrossing aspect of creating DEMETER. To be precise, we met integrating the database, understanding, analyzing, and utilizing HTTP requests and responses for a smooth workflow of our program, along with picking up the intricacies of JSON parsing. It was our second hackathon, and we were relatively new to the industry; being freshmen, acquiring all this knowledge to create fully functional software it was a huge challenge. We did have a considerable basic understanding, but the beauty in learning all these fundamentals was an enriching experience that opened the doors to ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
1) Curating an operative program catering to the needs of its users up to a booming 97% efficiency factor in a time-strained and pressure-some environment. 2) Compiling the technical sense of knowledge to achieve moral and healthy outcomes by shaking hands with biological knowledge. 3) One of our most significant achievements was that we utilized the opportunity and learn something new that we never knew before or had yet to learn.
What we learned
During the hackathon, we learned several crucial technical skills in developing DEMETER. We gained knowledge in web parsing, which allowed us to gather information from foodnetwork.com, and learned how to utilize APIs such as OpenAI, BeautifulSoup, and Requests to process data more efficiently. Working with databases was also a significant learning experience. We learned how to analyze and utilize HTTP requests and responses, which helped create a smooth workflow and obtain necessary information. We also gained a deeper understanding of JSON parsing, which was critical in processing data. In addition to technical skills, we learned the importance of collaboration and teamwork. As a team, we worked together and shared our knowledge to create a fully functional program that catered to the needs of its users. Finally, the hackathon allowed us to apply our expertise and gain a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence. We learned how to leverage technology to create a program that could benefit people's health and well-being. This experience also allowed us to develop problem-solving skills and think creatively to overcome obstacles and create something valuable.
