Inspiration

Choosing the right degree is one of the most critical decisions in a student’s life, yet many students make this choice with limited guidance. Academic pressure, parental expectations, and lack of awareness about career options often lead to confusion and poor decisions. We were inspired to create Degree Decider to address this gap by providing students with a reliable, data-driven way to choose a degree that aligns with their interests, skills, and academic strengths.

⚙️ What It Does

Degree Decider is a decision-support application that helps students identify suitable academic degrees based on their personal and academic profile. By analyzing factors such as marks, subject preferences, skills, and career goals, the system generates personalized degree recommendations along with potential career paths. This helps students make informed decisions rather than relying on guesswork or external pressure.

🛠️ How We Built It

We built Degree Decider using a structured and modular development approach. The application collects user inputs through a simple interface and processes them using rule-based logic and scoring mechanisms. Degree eligibility criteria and career data are stored in a structured database. The backend handles data validation, analysis, and recommendation generation, while the frontend ensures a smooth and intuitive user experience.

⚠️ Challenges We Ran Into

One major challenge was balancing student interests with academic eligibility to ensure realistic recommendations. Designing a system that remains accurate despite variations in grading systems and educational backgrounds was also challenging. Additionally, simplifying complex career data into an easy-to-understand output for students required careful design decisions.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We successfully developed a working application that provides personalized degree recommendations rather than generic advice. The project addresses a real-world problem and demonstrates how technology can positively impact students’ futures. We are also proud of creating a clean, user-friendly interface that makes career guidance accessible to a wider audience.

📘 What We Learned

This project taught us the importance of user-centered design and data-driven decision-making. We gained hands-on experience in system design, logic building, and translating real-life problems into scalable technical solutions. We also learned the value of teamwork, planning, and iterative development.

🚀 What’s Next for Degree Decider

We plan to enhance Degree Decider by incorporating AI and machine learning to improve recommendation accuracy over time. Future features include aptitude and personality assessments, college and scholarship recommendations, and a mobile application for wider accessibility. Our long-term goal is to build a comprehensive digital career guidance platform.
