Inspiration
As a female athlete and ex- volunteer coach (for 10 years!) - I have experienced my fair share of gender inequality in sports, especially my sport: track and field. As a coach and athlete, opportunities are limited, and your voice often feels small and washed out in a sea of misogony.
The women's decathlon is a movement aiming to get this inequality fixed, starting from the top. In the Olympics and Major Champs, the decathlon is only available to men - the heptathlon (7 events: introduced 1984) being the only available option for women, which was originally only a pentathlon (5 events: introduced 1964). Meanwhile the men's decathlon has been in full swing since 1912.
What it does
decaGirl hopes to be part of the movement that helps to fix this. By providing a women's decathlon points calculator, education, and the in-app AI expert Olympia, decaGirl aims to bridge the gap.
Olympia provides insights to your training based on your provided score, explains the decathlon problem and goal, and is also there to chat about everything women's decathlon, to spread awareness, training ideas and education to the app users.
How we built it
decaGirl is built with flutter, firebase and vertex AI, within the project IDX environment.
Challenges we ran into
I started off my typing in lengthy descriptions and educational content for the app, but then I realised that Olympia could provide these for me - and probably explain them better! Making things more simple for me, and for the user.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being a solo woman developer developing a real world solution for other women :)
What we learned
The true impact that AI can have on development, and therefore on real world problems and solutions.
What's next for decaGirl
- work on making the app more accessible for users with disabilities, different ages, abilities and para-sport inclusivity
- training ideas for the general population who are not necessarily interested in competing in a decathlon, but would be interested in training like a decathlete to keep fit.
- submission to the IOC Young Leaders program
- more refinement to the decaGirl AI, Olympia, to provide more detailed and coach-backed advice.
- use of gender affirming language in support of transgender and non-binary athletes and friends
