Inspiration
We wanted to create a fun, inclusive Visual Novel adventure game that teaches students through fun logic and programming puzzles.
The Story
Our game involves Roachie, a cockroach, who had been told that they would never become a Software Engineer since that role had only ever been occupied by butterflies in the past. In desperation, Roachie went to the UTD Subreddit to seek advice. Roachie found a post detailing the legend of Temoc where Temoc can grant any wish. Roachie sets out on an adventure to find Temoc in hopes that they can become a butterfly.
How We Built It
Ren'py & Python for the coding portion. Krita & Procreate for the design and art.
Challenges We Ran Into
Our team has not used Ren'py or Python before, so we had to read a lot of documentation to learn for this project.
Accomplishments that I'm Proud Of
We are proud to have hand drawn (almost) ALL of the graphics you see in this game! On the programming side, we are proud to have implemented a logic puzzle that utilizes what we learned in our Artificial Intelligence, Automata Theory, and Digital Logic courses.
We are also so proud of the state diagram we drew for the logic game! It really was a cumulation of all the CS classes we've taken in the past put to use!
What We Learned
We learned about coding with Ren'py and Python. We also learned about all the work that goes into a visual novel game with all its paths. Primarily working with all the labels and jumps within the conditions of the game.
What's next for deBUG: The Last Temoc
More chapters that show Roachie's path to Temoc. Roachie makes new friends along the way and learns more about his misconceptions about others as others accept Roachie for who they are. Other logic puzzle games will teach other programming concepts.
