The experience of traveling to new environments is detracted from the effort it takes to navigate there. The cell phone and its navigation system vies for the users attention, causing them to miss out on the world around them, and the people their with. Our team set out to provide a solution to this attention deficit that detracts from the travel experience. Therefore, we decided to build an autonomouse drone navigation platform that could function as a tour guide, as we realized that having a more intuitive way of navigating (following the drone at a walking pace), frees the user to take in their surroundings.
We built an autonomous drone that guides a user to their intended destination, built using a DJI Flamewheel F450 quadcopter frame, a Pixhawk autopilot module, and a 3DR GPS/compass module. The flight instructions are sent from an Android device that is connected via 915 mHz radio transmitter to a receiver that is on the drone. The Android also detects whether the user has stopped, in which case it signals the drone to wait for the user. A GoPro camera that is connected to the Pixhawk takes picture of the users while they are on route. Finally, an onboard speaker dictates to the user when they have started and finished their route.
