Inspiration: We have always learned about the pressing issues of food waste and food insecurity. After learning about the abundance of surplus food in restaurants, combined with the prevalence of hunger within our local communities, we recognized an opportunity to create positive change, both environmentally and socially. Did you know that the restaurant industry sheds $162 billion annually in food waste costs? If 15% of this food was diverted to the food insecure Americans, that would cut the number of them by ½! These problems made us hungry (lol) to create a website to combat this problem.
What it does: Our website connects local food shelters with restaurants with excess food.
How we built it: Web dev skills, VScode, github, firebase!
Challenges we ran into: Keeping font and format uniform throughout the website. Making a firebase website which the code can access. We need this to fetch data from the database and to add or delete entries in the database.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: teamwork and dedication to this website! Working through unexpected errors, and difficulties. First hackathon together as a team.
What we learned: lots of web dev skills (including signup, authentication, database work, etc), how to work under pressure, learned about all of the waste problems in the world, and how much food waste contributes to climate change.
What's next for nourish: sustainable meals: hosting this website using Firebase hosting services to share knowledge and climate-saving opportunities to all.
