Inspiration
One day, as I was struggling to arrange the index of a new subject, the idea struck me like a bolt of lightning. Why not create a platform that streamlines this process? An innovative solution that would allow educators to effortlessly arrange, indent, duplicate, and share their syllabi. This was the spark that ignited the CurricuExpert project.
Today, CurricuExpert stands as a testament to the power of innovation in education. It's a tool designed by educators, for educators, and it continues to evolve with the feedback and needs of the teaching community. My hope is that CurricuExpert will not only make the lives of educators easier but also enhance the learning experience for students around the world.
What it does
Users can create and write chapter names in a specific order, typically as they would appear in the syllabus. Indenting/Outdenting Chapters:
Users can indent or outdent chapters to create a hierarchical structure. Indenting makes a chapter a subtopic of the previous chapter, while outdenting promotes it to a main topic.
Subtopic Indentation:
When a chapter has subtopics, indenting or outdenting the main chapter also affects the indentation of all its subtopics. This maintains the structure and hierarchy.
Deleting Topics:
Deleting a main topic should also delete all of its subtopics to maintain the integrity of the syllabus structure.
Copying/Duplicating Chapters:
Users can duplicate entire chapters with all their subtopics. This feature allows educators to reuse content efficiently.
Drag and Drop:
Chapters and subtopics can be rearranged by dragging and dropping them within the syllabus. This feature enhances the flexibility of syllabus organization.
Download as PDF:
Users can download the entire syllabus as a PDF document. This PDF can be shared with students or other educators.
Download as JSON:
Users have the option to download the syllabus structure as a JSON file. This file can be uploaded later for further editing or reference.
Undo/Redo Functionality:
The project should support seamless undo and redo operations throughout the syllabus creation process. This allows users to correct mistakes or backtrack changes as needed.
In summary, your project provides a user-friendly interface for educators to organize syllabus content efficiently. It includes features for creating, arranging, duplicating, and sharing syllabus materials while maintaining a structured hierarchy. Additionally, it offers data export options in both PDF and JSON formats and ensures a smooth editing experience with undo and redo capabilities.
How I built it
This project is mailny built using react js as front end while also using its most fundamental functionalities. All of the icons and design is built with top notch css styling along with the best code practises.
The project is divided into components and subcomponents. I have used separation of constraint while building this application therefore all of the data is kept centralized so that it can be reused leading to less duplication of code.
Challenges I ran into
There were several challanges while building this project. User Interface (UI) Design: Designing an intuitive and user-friendly interface that allows users to easily perform actions like indenting, outdenting, dragging and dropping, and copying/duplicating chapters can be challenging. Striking the right balance between simplicity and functionality is crucial.
Hierarchical Data Structure: Managing the hierarchical structure of chapters and subtopics can be complex, especially when dealing with nested levels. I needed a robust data structure and algorithms to maintain this hierarchy.
Data Synchronization: Ensuring that changes made by one user are reflected in real-time for others, especially in a collaborative environment, can be challenging. I had to implement synchronization mechanisms to handle concurrent edits.
Undo/Redo Implementation: Implementing a seamless undo/redo functionality across various actions while maintaining the integrity of the syllabus structure can be technically challenging.
Exporting to PDF: Generating a PDF representation of the syllabus, including formatting, indentation, and page breaks, can be tricky.I had to use third-party libraries or tools for this.
Performance Optimization: As the syllabus grows in size, performance can become a concern. I had to optimize data rendering and manipulation to ensure smooth user interactions.
What we learned
