Our Inspiration.

E-commerce is a deep and complex domain that may be overwhelming for new merchants. We thought that there should be some kind of resource or tool to help beginners wanting to get started in the world of e-commerce. The Cupify game we created is inspired by some of the older online games we used to play as kids (like Cooking Mama). In these games, you need to complete a task within a certain time limit in order to be successful. We realized this was a great aspect to incorporate in our game since, in reality, late delivery can have real ramifications.

The Goal of Cupify.

Cupify aims to educate new merchants on e-commerce, in a fun and interactive way. The user will be exposed to key elements of e-commerce throughout the game, such as packaging, accounting, and shipping. Throughout the multiple rounds, the user will leverage these three aspects of e-commerce and hopefully become a super seller (of cute cups in this case)!

How we built it.

We built a web application using React and Redux and deployed it using Netlify. The UI design hasn't been fully applied to the app yet, but most of the game logic has been implemented. We used Figma for prototyping and Adobe Illustrator for all the original graphics.

Challenges we ran into.

While building this game, our team faced the challenge of narrowing down which modalities of e-commerce to focus on. We started off with a lot of ideas, so it took a bit of time to refine our game concept to the most important elements. However, through our brainstorming sessions, and video calls we were able to unanimously agree on our final idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of.

Our team is proud of the Cupify game concept and execution. Our game name plays off of the Shopify concept itself, except the user is selling cups specifically. We also thought that adding ratings and a way for the user to lose or gain profit made the game very fun and interesting. The playful illustrations we incorporated helped add visual interest to the game.

What we learned.

During this project, our team learned how to budget our time wisely in order to complete this game. Our team was lucky enough to have members from the varying fields of UX design, graphic design, and development. We each brought our own unique perspectives to this project and learned new things along the way. For example, some members learned how to collaborate using Figma for the first time.

What's next for Cupify?

In the future, our team is willing to add more game features and details that can further reflect the real market. For example, there could be another modality added where the user has to account for product returns. Another interesting feature to develop could include a round where the user must pick a method of marketing their cups (email marketing, social media, Influencer marketing...).
