Inspiration
With the ongoing pandemic, many of us find ourselves trapped within our own homes with nothing to do but to imagine the idea of travelling to our dream destinations. Our team at least can attest to this. Being stuck at home with online school has become lonely and boring (but definitely not relaxing) and we set out to put together an experience for users to explore what the world has to offer while making new friends along the way. Furthermore, with the world growing ever more divided, we envisioned creating a worldwide community where individuals can bond over the sharing of cultures and differences. Essentially, we hoped to combat the far-reaching consequences of social deprivation and isolation on adolescent development.
What it does
The culture app is built to help users learn more about selected countries of their choice. This is done by connecting users with a variety of resources such as recipes, books, films and facts. It also has built-in social features such as the forum page and the friends page to allow users to create meaningful connections in order to learn more about different cultures from a personal standpoint.
How We built it
We used Figma to create an animated app prototype for our design.
Challenges We ran into
For many of us, this was the first time designing an app and using the Figma framework. As a result, the planning process could have been more streamlined and the project details could have been further elaborated upon. Figma was definitely a learning curve and took some time to get used to. However, as the project drew closer to finish, it became easier to achieve the desired results.
Accomplishments that We're proud of
Although it took some time as stated previously to go through the design process and build the app, we as a team are proud that we were able to actually end up producing the prototype within the timeframe (despite some time conflicts). It may not seem like much, but it’s honest work.
What We learned
As a team, we learned that a lot of thought must go into designing an app and that a good design takes into account many different factors that we had not previously realized. The next app we design will definitely factor in more of these elements and be far more powerful.
What's next for Culture App
Depending on how the app is received, more features will be added and the designs will be further polished to create a better overall user interface and user experience. Following that, we may move into the backend and build up the actual app framework so that it may be available for download. Note, this may take a very long time.
