Inspiration: As a Muslim Egyptian, I personally follow a halal diet, which makes finding suitable food options challenging. I’ve noticed people in Facebook groups offering home-cooked meals catering to various dietary needs—like halal, kosher, gluten-free, vegan, and lactose-free. Friends of mine also have dietary restrictions, making it tricky to find convenient food options when we gather. Although there are local home chefs passionate about cooking for specific diets, their businesses often remain unknown and struggle to thrive, largely relying on social media ads or word-of-mouth within small circles. This untapped network inspired us to create a platform to bridge the gap, benefiting both customers with dietary restrictions and skilled home chefs.

What it Does: Our solution is an app that connects home-based chefs specializing in specific dietary needs with customers looking for safe, healthy, and customized home-cooked meals. Users can save time, eat safely, and enjoy food tailored to their dietary requirements.

How We Built It: We developed a website using HTML and CSS for the front end, with Python and Flask powering the backend.

Challenges We Faced: Lack of App Development Experience: No one on our team had app development experience, so we pivoted to web development, which was more familiar to us. Data Handling: Managing and structuring data was challenging and time-consuming. Swift Programming: We explored Swift for app development but found it would require significant time to learn.

Accomplishments: We’re proud to have a functional website to showcase, despite the technical difficulties and numerous errors we encountered along the way.

Lessons Learned: Discussions with mentors provided us with new approaches for tackling the project. While we couldn't implement these ideas within our timeframe, having a strategic plan was valuable.

What’s Next for Culinary Compass: AI Integration: Implement AI to match users with chefs and generate personalized dietary plans. App Development: Create a mobile app for wider accessibility. Certification System: Implement a certification process for chefs, ensuring they’re trained in allergen-free cooking and cross-contamination prevention. Health App Integration: Link with health-tracking apps (e.g., MyFitnessPal, Fitbit) to allow users to monitor their nutritional intake. Partnerships with Dietitians: Collaborate with dietitians to provide health-based meal recommendations, enhancing dietary guidance.
