Inspiration
With wildfires becoming increasingly common, closest to home being the Jasper wildfire of 2024. We thought of the ways technology can aid in disaster prevention and response. An important aspect of fire safety is maximum occupency, which determines the maximum number of people that can be in a space based on several factors. Adhering to maximum occupency is crucial as it prevents overcrowding and ensures quick, safe evacuation in case of emergencies like fires.
What it does
Crowd Check is real-time occupancy monitoring system for designed for fire safety and crowd management. Using computer vision, it detects and counts people in a space while providing a historical occupancy graph for data analysis. The system alerts users when occupancy limits are exceeded, helping maintain fire safety compliance. Our standout feature, Fire Drill Mode, tracks live evacuation progress, ensuring no one is left behind in an emergency. With applications in schools, offices, malls, and event spaces, Crowd Check provides a smarter, more efficient way to monitor spaces and improve emergency response.
How we built it
We used Python for our backend, React for our frontend, Firebase for our database, and RoboFlow’s Head Detection (CCTV) Detection Model for our pre-trained model.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues with the frontend, especially with the email sending procedure, which was inconsistent. Moreover, half of our team was unfamiliar with React, so we had to quickly learn and adapt while building the user interface.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the quick email alert system and the real-time updates. But more importantly, we are proud of our team's effectiveness and willingness to learn unfamiliar technology, picking up React and frontend development in a short time to bring our vision to life.
What we learned
Pair programming is best!
What's next for Crowd Check
We plan to polish the UI, enhance the visual presentation of data, integrate multi-user support, and improve the website's accessibility. Ultimately, we hope to deploy Crowd Check for public use, helping organizations improve fire safety and emergency preparedness.
