Inspiration

We were inspired by the classes we took over the weekend, specifically the Python and javascript workshops, which inspired the API focus of the project. The COVID angle was inspired by the google cloud track for the hackathon, and even though we did not end up using google cloud, the direction it pointed us in was one we feel is very meaningful.

What it does

The website uses an API to find COVID deaths per million, and calculates the warnings/guidelines for the chosen area based on that number.

How we built it

The website was built using javascript and HTML/CSS. The API we used was "https://about-corona.net/documentation" We also used some code from the workshops we attended, but modified it to suit our personal needs (we were allowed to do so by the organizers).

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge for us was the learning curve for coding, as neither of us had much coding experience prior to the hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we made the site in the first place, as this is a new experience for both of us.

What we learned

We leaned how to integrate an API, and expanded our knowledge of javascript.

What's next for CovidCareful

CovidCareful is still in its very early stages, and has a lot of room to grow. It currently has a limited amount of country choices, and the interface is still kind of iffy. The next steps for this website will be to fix the site, and to improve the API integration.
