Inspiration

Courtava was inspired by a frustrating experience shared by many basketball players: arriving at a court excited to play, only to find it empty. Players often don’t know where games are happening, which courts are active, or who is available to play. We realized sports participation is limited not by talent or interest, but by lack of connection and information.

What it does

Courtava helps basketball players discover active courts, find pickup games, connect with local players, and access useful information about nearby playing spots. Our goal is to make joining a game as easy as opening an app.

How we built it

We built Courtava using modern mobile and web technologies, combining maps, authentication systems, and real-time data features to create an experience centered around sports communities. We focused on simplicity, speed, and location-based discovery.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was designing a platform that accurately reflects activity around courts in real time. We also faced technical hurdles with maps integration, authentication flows, and building features that remain useful even in areas with limited digital sports infrastructure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We transformed a common problem faced by players into a startup vision with potential to improve sports participation across Africa. We built early prototypes, refined our idea through feedback, and created a clear mission around community and accessibility and we got 60+ people to sign up for early access .

What we learned

We learned that building technology is only part of creating impact; understanding communities and user behavior matters just as much. We also learned the importance of iteration and listening to users early.

What’s next for Courtava

We aim to launch with basketball communities first, grow across Rwanda, and eventually expand to other sports and African markets. Our long-term vision is for Courtava to become Africa’s platform for discovering games, sports spaces, and active communities.
