Inspiration

Natasha, one of Cortadito’s creators, is a Latina and native of Tampa, Florida. She has worked in international education and has seen firsthand how immigration issues affect the Latinx community by creating barriers that are nearly impossible for them to break. When brainstorming about the idea for the app, she thought about the challenges she faces as a 2nd generation Puerto Rican in the U.S. Things like maintaining her cultural traditions and language after generations of immigrtation and mental health issues that persist uniquely in the Latinx community. After seeing that Miami being 71% Latinx faces many of the same issues, our team decided it was time for action!

What it does

Our app is meant to prepare our residentes of Miami to integrate with the remaining 29% of its people. And connects people from Latin-America to resources available in Miami as well as people in the community.

How we built it

Cordatito is a React based app and styled using react-bootstrap framework and custom CSS

Challenges we ran into

The first challenge was to decide what we wanted to built and have a clear functionality of the app.

None of us were familiar with bootstrap so learning how to integrate.

With Login and reg/ we had to find how to use localStorage for the first time, and ran into a lot of bugs and issues. The mentors were very helpful in helping us figure it out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

There were many accomplishments that we are proud of during this Hackathon! As a group, we met for the first time a few days before the Hackathon over the Flatiron School Slack channel. We learned to work closely and effectively together while getting to know one another. This was also the first Hackathon for two of our teammates (Pema and Jen). We built the project based off of each person's skills and strengths, as well as helping each other whenever someone is facing an issue. Our project was inspired by our multicultural and immigrant backgrounds, as well as our passion for creating an application to help others who need help integrating into American society. In terms of our project features, we are proud of our cool and unique functionalities of an image carousel for great visual impact, login/logout feature, our language translation button for people who speak other languages, real pictures of our friends and family representing the Latinx community, and resources linking to mental health/legal agencies in Miami-Dade county.

What we learned

Through collaborating, we were able to pick up new technical skills both from each other and the mentors. We learned how to use react-bootstrap, browser local storage, and most importantly, how to work with each other

What's next for Cortadito

We plan to make it so the app is fully functional with a backend. That way, users ca create accounts and chose to host events and experiences or register for existing events
