Inspiration

As working college students, we understand how it feels to be tired in the morning and always helping people out. In college, the hallways are filled with strangers but acquaintances and friends pop up from out of nowhere with a greeting. The greeting would lead to a wonderful chat, which would lift our moods. Sometimes, it leads to favors that require a lot of energy, such as midterm review, when a student's schedule is already tight with studies and work. As we want to determine obstacles in a game, we decided to turn the scenario around and create the blue person and red person obstacles and make the map as one long hallway.

What's the main idea?

The message is to not always say yes and to see the repercussions of doing so.

How we built it

As the team were more into design, we decided to make a website showcasing a game rather than the game itself. We used Figma to design the website and PiskelApp and MSPaint for pixel art. The YouTube video was edited with Adobe Premiero Pro.

Challenges we ran into

The brainstorming took too much time. There was no time limit for the brain storming or a timeline provided besides the due dates. The changes in the in-person Hackathon schedule confused us while we try to work on our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Annie and Carlos loved learning Figma from the in-person Figma workshop and mentor. Sandra had fun finishing the pixel animation for the sprites.

What we learned

Annie and Carlos learned about prototyping and content organization. They love learning Figma and will continue to use it after the hackathon. Sandra learned how to make animated GIFs.

What's next for Cope Academy

Developing the game. First, new objects should be defined, such as new encounters with food or certain people that recovers physical or mental health. A new obstacle, a purple person, drains both physical and mental energy. We will look into game development and continue to create more animation and dialogue. Dialogue will be added. We look forward to adding cut scenes or more details scenes when encountering an obstacle.
