Inspiration
Convene is inspired by the universal struggle university students face when trying to remember and find new events occurring on campus. Often the onus was on students to continue be checking the many Facebook pages of all the clubs they were interested in. Many students often find themselves missing events, ignoring notifications, or in most cases not knowing about events at all! Convene hopes to help foster a deeper sense of community within the student body and make sure everyone is aware of events occurring on campus. More students will be aware of the wide range of club events going on at university and clubs will also boast higher attendances and a stream of new members interested in their activities.
What it does
Convene allows users to access a map of campus where upcoming events for each day are pinned for students to easily see. Users will be able to navigate into the event to find out more information as well as access any external links relevant to the event. Clubs will have the ability to publicise upcoming events to the wider student body by inputting pins on the map of future events. There will be a system for users to search for particular events and add events they are interested into their own accounts.
How we built it
This web app was built using react for the frontend and firebase for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge for our group was learning the new frameworks. A number of team members were learning how to use react, firebase and Figma for the first time this hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making it and having it hosted in time
What we learned
We learned through trial and error the process it takes to go from having an idea to an creating actual product. This involved learning the skills necessary to design the web app and bring it to fruition through coding it.
What's next for Convene
Convene is an app that can be repurposed for many different organisations. Although Convene is currently tailored to the student experience at Unimelb it can easily be extended to other universities and colleges globally. The idea of having a map where certain club-based events can even be used in a corporate setting where large corporations often have outside-of-work interest groups that hold events around the office. This software will encourage any group to become a closer community by simplifying the process to access new events.
Within the app itself, we hope to also introduce new features such as linking user accounts Google Calendar so subscribed events can appear as well as introducing searching by event tags.
