So many kids across the world do not have access to quality education.
This project was invented with the idea of providing these kids with easy access to articles, documentaries, films, art work, etc. that analyze, interpret, or explain a particular literary masterpiece. The supporting texts each help the reader understand the literary work in a more profound way. All English courses at the university level aim to provide this level of understanding and require all students to read these supporting texts, but searching for these texts can take professors in the process of composing syllabi many weeks. The project implemented herein simplifies this process by searching databases for the most prominent articles, films, etc., and outputting them onto a singular server. This eliminates the timely research professors must put in to develop syllabi while also serving as a quality literary resource to those children who have no access to higher education and will never have a professor who can guide them towards these texts.
I used python and html and css and the DPLA (Digital Public Library of America) API to code this project.
Challenges I ran into: Several literary databases provide APIs for searching, but many of them were hard to implement. I eventually stumbled upon the DPLA API and it seemed to fit what I needed.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of: I am a new hacker, currently taking the Intro to Computer Science class at Rutgers. At HackHers Spring 2018, I learned three new tools I had known nothing about coming in. I learned Python, HTML, and a bit of CSS.
What's next for ConTEXTual: I hope to develop it to include more databases aside from DBLA. I hope to implement the top results and link them to the images displayed via HTML in a display with enhanced aesthetics.
