Inspiration
The world is going through totally different times today, and there is more need to give back and help each other during these uncertain times. ComHlpSch.com website is created during the COVID-19 pandemic when so much of the school's funding is needed to make the school environment safe, technology to support the staff and children, new learning tools for online learning, investment in professional learning, etc. Usually, the PTOs would hold fundraising events to generate funds, but such efforts are limited and not sustainable in these times. Schools are receiving limited funding from state and federal, but the need to provide and improve education has grown. Covid-19 has cost schools over 42 billion dollars so far, schools are in dire need of funds, and more importantly, there is a need to create a solution that helps the schools continually. I came up with the ComHlpSch.com website which connects the schools with the community to get much needed help.
What it does
ComHlpSch.com website provides a platform that connects the schools and the community, facilitating an easy way to communicate and fulfill the school's needs. The schools can use the "Request Supplies or Funds" link on the ComHlpSch.com website to request supplies, funds, or volunteer services. Supplies can be requested from the pre-identified list or use the "other supplies" option to request for different supplies that are needed. The school can also request volunteer service on the selected dates. Similarly, there is a form for the community where they can choose to contribute. ComHlpSch.com site processes the responses and connects the school and community members as needed.
Why I built it
The project started when I was thinking of ideas for AlphaHacks Hackathon. My thought stems from how much of the school's funding is going into cleaning supplies to make a safe environment for the children to return to school. People have learned of the necessity to keep the environment safe for themselves and their children; online learning has impacted many families. It is crucial to bring the children back to school safely for in-person learning. Funding should not be a roadblock for this step forward. Donating funds or supplies at this time is difficult because there isn't an easy way. The schools need a sustainable platform to communicate with the community about their needs. Hence, I created the ComHlpSch.com website to help connect the schools and the community.
How I built it
I built the website using qoom.io by creating the HTML pages for the three forms, the home page, community donation form, and school admin request form. Finally, I added pictures to the home page to visually connect the users to the need.
Challenges I ran into
Some challenges that I ran into were trying to move the images around to fit the homepage boxes, adding colors to the buttons, etc. I also needed to learn HTML to complete this project all in one day and make it look professional, as this is the first time I am working with HTML.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I tried experimenting with code and made things that were cool and useful to my project. I like how the home page looks, and I see the different possibilities of taking this website to a whole new level.
What I learned
I started learning HTML, Java, and it has introduced me to the world of coding. This hackathon has made me interested in coding and let me learn many new things that I didn’t know before.
What's next for ComHlpSch
I want to develop a mobile app on IOS and Android to make the app more accessible. Next, I would focus on the adoptability of the app extending beyond one school, reminder features when supplies are low. Finally, I want to make this app AI-enabled to make automated matching of schools, and donors.
