Inspiration
We noticed a growing tension among young adults: the desire to live fully in the moment while still wanting to preserve meaningful memories. Social media encourages documenting for others rather than cherishing experiences personally, often leading to regret when meaningful moments go uncaptured. We immediately thought of the striking visual and metaphorical representation of the core memory orbs in Pixar’s Inside Out. This inspired Cœur, a tool that helps people capture life’s meaningful moments with intention.
What it does
Cœur allows users to capture, relive, and reflect on meaningful memories in a deeper way.The platform allows a limited number of photos to be uploaded, as well as scents and audio clips. It is personal to the user, with no social elements.
How we built it
We began by conducting user interviews to understand how people define and recall their most meaningful moments. From these insights, we mapped user pain points and behaviors, sketched concepts and created low-fidelity wireframes, iterated through multiple UI layouts (highlighted memory, orb collection, library views), and incorporated mentor feedback throughout the design process. Finally, we created a high-fidelity prototype that reflected our mission statement: to create a way to capture moments that lets users stay present while preserving the essence of the moment.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to designing reminders that help without overwhelming users, which is why we decided to let them choose between having reminders during, after, or at all. It was also challenging to avoid social media aesthetics to ensure memories remained personal, not performative.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
From the beginning, we knew that we didn’t want to create a social media; we wanted to ensure that memories remained personal, not performative. In addition, beyond simply just capturing memories, we wanted to help users relive their memories by supporting emotional and sensory details using features like voice memos for reflections and scent notes for greater immersion.
What we learned
Throughout this process, we knew that the design would be incredibly important because this app is so personal. Therefore, we worked very hard on the interaction designs, which is definitely a point of pride. We were able to deeply explore prototyping in Figma, as well as balancing design/business thinking with visual aesthetics.
What's next for Cœur
Our next steps include music integration. Songs hold deep connection to memory, and allowing users to add songs to their cœurs would strengthen their memory and help them relive it. We’d also like to implement historical data to show trends and patterns over time.
