Inspiration
As teenagers, we become aware of the lifestyles of celebrities from social media. Oftentimes, we see celebrities using such carbon-intensive modes of transit to an almost comical degree. We wanted to solve this problem to some extent, but it was difficult to come up with a valid incentive for individuals to do so. Eventually, our chain of though lead to this idea, CO2.AI
What it does
The app develops CO2 efficient alternative transit routes using AI. By switching to alternative routes, users obtain carbon coins, which they can exchange for free or discounted products. Where do we get these free products? We partner with large carbon-intensive companies, where they offer us their product for free in exchange for brand association with reducing emissions and a larger customer base (and tax cuts!) We also created a device that allows people to be aware of the alternative routes in live time, with a display of their carbon coins. This creates a win-win-win scenario: We win by reducing carbon emissions, our users win by getting free products, and our partners win with greater brand awareness and positive association with environmentalism.
How we built it
We began by spending 45 minutes outlining a detailed plan and framework by which to work by. We then spent a few hours constructing a polished frontend. We then spent the remainder of the time developing backend and software. We went on a marketing campaign, interviewing some people over our app.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult integrating the hardware and backend due to a ridiculous amount of discrepancies and bugs. Having to stay awake for 24 hours straight was not fun, especially staring at a screen.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a very clean looking frontend and created functioning hardware! Great marketing campaign and business model.
What we learned
Start working on the hardware and backend earlier! Integration is key!
What's next for CO2.AI
We plan on developing this app into a fully fledged business, where we begin by partnering with local businesses, and expanding into greater partnerships.
