Inspiration
We were inspired by games like Gimkit and Kahoot which are used to learn in the classroom. We specifically noticed the shortcomings of these games and wanted to create something that would encourage verbal communication in the classroom rather than something that distracted from direct learning.
What it does
Co-Laboratory encourages students to work together to earn points for their classroom; however, competitive elements keep the system interesting. Our project is specifically geared towards lower and middle schoolers. Points earned in class would be able to be spent in an in-game shop, although cumulative class points would also be earned and would fund goals set by teachers. A class podium would also show progress between different classrooms.
How we built it
We used VSCode and coded the program using Javascript, css, and html. We used LiveShare to collaborate on the document, and worked iteratively to design each component in order to create the best product possible. This is a rough draft and we plan on updating it later.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges included the point system and organizing the text within our screen, although these were minimal and handled easily.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One thing we emphasized was making a game that was entirely human. With two artists on the team, we decided to hand-draw all art used in the game.
What we learned
We learned how to use html, javascript, and css.
What's next for Co - Laborartory
Our section focused primarily on the teacher end of the program. However, in the future we would like to further flesh out the aspects that would be seen by the program's users, such as the shop and the class Podium view.
