Close The Curtains — Project Brief
Overview
Close The Curtains is an optional streaming mode that gently skips intimate or inappropriate scenes while preserving story continuity through clean, AI-generated plot summaries. It is designed to support shared and family viewing without blocking content entirely.
The Problem
Mainstream streaming content largely reflects Western storytelling norms, where explicit scenes are commonly used as narrative devices. However, global audiences are not culturally monolithic, especially in shared or family viewing environments.
According to :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}, 74\% of parents report that inappropriate media content is a major concern when choosing what to watch with their families. Even brief moments can disrupt viewing experiences, create discomfort, or force manual skipping that causes viewers to miss important plot context.
Existing parental control tools often operate in a binary way—either allowing full access or blocking content entirely—failing to address moment-level discomfort.
Our Insight
The issue is not the story itself, but how specific moments are portrayed. Many viewers want access to mainstream content without sacrificing comfort, dignity, or narrative understanding.
This represents a content accessibility challenge, not censorship.
The Solution
Close The Curtains introduces a gentle, opt-in viewing mode that:
- Identifies sensitive scenes in advance
- Seamlessly skips only those moments
- Preserves narrative continuity through neutral summaries
- Feels calm, respectful, and non-judgmental
How It Works (Conceptual)
The system relies on preprocessed content, not real-time detection:
- Scene transcripts and boundaries are analyzed
- Sensitive segments are flagged ahead of playback
- Clean, non-explicit summaries are generated
- Playback skips occur automatically during flagged moments
No live monitoring or user profiling is required.
Prototype Scope
This submission includes a high-fidelity Figma prototype demonstrating:
- Scene-level skipping behavior
- Curtain transition animation
- Clean Plot Point Summary overlay
The prototype represents the intended user experience, not a production-ready integration.
Closing Thought
Close The Curtains is built on the belief that stories should bring people together—not create discomfort or exclusion.
By adapting how content is experienced rather than limiting access, this project explores a more inclusive future for global streaming platforms.
