Claude-Cofounder: Where AI and Builders Collide Hackathons are thrilling—until they’re not. As seasoned participants, we’ve repeatedly found ourselves staring at blank screens just 30 minutes before submission deadlines, scrambling to validate ideas only to realize we’re one of five teams building yet another parking app. Worse still, we’ve often missed out on ideal teammates because we discovered too late that someone in the room could’ve helped us crush the UX or the API integration.
That pain was our spark. We asked: What if Claude could be our always-on co-founder? What if an AI could not just help us brainstorm, but also validate, pitch, and even match us with dream collaborators—all before the first line of code?
Thus, Claude-Cofounder was born.
Learning What Really Matters One of our first discoveries was how much Claude’s personality mattered. By customizing system prompts—like having Claude roleplay as Marc Andreessen—we saw engagement skyrocket. Builders loved it. Combining Haiku's speed with Opus’s depth gave us the best of both worlds, allowing rapid ideation followed by deep, strategic insight.
We also realized that when AI met social context, the magic multiplied. Builders trusted Claude’s suggestions significantly more—3x more—when their peers backed the same ideas. Real-time moderation via Claude also helped create a safe, focused environment. Toxic comments, which often derail early collaboration, dropped by 80%.
And perhaps most surprisingly, we found that Berkeley itself was a goldmine. Tapping into campus-specific data—from dorm pain points to student APIs—made ideas feel immediately actionable and hyper-relevant.
Building It: From Dream to Demo We built Claude-Cofounder with a modern, mobile-first stack. The frontend was developed in React Native using Gluestack UI, while the backend ran on Firebase with Cloud Functions managing real-time features. Claude’s Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models were chained to balance ideation and analysis, and we integrated Agora.io to power live video pitch sessions.
The app’s key flows centered around:
60-Second Ideation – Claude generated total addressable market (TAM) estimates and competitive analysis for user-submitted ideas.
Pitch Arena – Users pitched to real or mock VCs with Claude providing live coaching and feedback.
Collab Match – Builders could barter skills—offering, say, UI design in exchange for backend help.
Overcoming Challenges The road to our MVP wasn’t smooth. Claude’s latency was a hurdle—so we pre-cached frequent queries like “How do I calculate TAM?” to keep the user experience seamless.
Implementing video call features in a hackathon timeframe was another stretch. Our solution? Use mock footage of Marc Andreessen for the demo, while still integrating the actual Agora API behind the scenes.
Moderation also proved tricky. At first, Claude was a bit too aggressive in flagging comments. After 50 rounds of test pitches, we adjusted the toxicity thresholds for more balanced feedback.
