Inspiration
ClassMage was inspired by the growing trend of students relying on general-purpose language models for study help, which often lack the context to provide accurate, course-specific answers. We envisioned a resource designed by educators for educators—one that offers students a “study wizard” who can be, as we like to say, “your new favorite classmate, ClassMage!”

What it does
ClassMage allows teachers to upload course materials like syllabi, PowerPoint slides, and PDFs. Our AI, the “study wizard,” then analyzes this content to create a knowledge base unique to each class. Students can ask questions anytime, and the wizard provides instant, accurate answers specific to their course, promoting independent learning outside of class.

How we built it
ClassMage combines natural language processing, machine learning, and document management to create a custom AI assistant. We developed a process that converts uploaded materials into a searchable database, training the AI to understand the structure, terminology, and key concepts of each course. This approach enables a smooth, engaging experience for students and teachers alike.

Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring ClassMage could interpret varied formats, from scanned PDFs to presentation slides, accurately. We also focused on fine-tuning the AI to understand course-specific terminology and provide answers that felt like a continuation of classroom learning. Balancing real-time responsiveness with accuracy was a key priority.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We’re proud of building an AI that functions as more than just a chatbot—it’s a true “study wizard” tailored to each course’s needs. Developing this dedicated learning assistant from the ground up has been an exciting achievement, especially as we strive to support both students and educators in meaningful ways.

What we learned
Throughout development, we learned the importance of crafting an AI tool that respects teachers’ expertise while giving students easy access to help. Working closely with educators has helped us refine ClassMage, ensuring it aligns with real-world classroom needs.

What’s next for ClassMage
Looking ahead, we plan to expand ClassMage’s features, such as adding support for video and audio content uploads to further enrich the AI’s knowledge. We also aim to develop analytics so teachers can track engagement and identify common questions. In the future, we hope to integrate ClassMage with popular LMS platforms, streamlining the tool for maximum classroom impact. ClassMage—your new favorite classmate!
