Inspiration

Health insurance denials affect millions every year, with over 73 million claims denied in the U.S. We discovered a key paradox: while about 90% of appeals succeed, only 2% of patients actually appeal. The real problem isn’t just denials — it’s the complexity and knowledge gap that stops people from taking action. CareClaim was built to close that gap and give patients the clarity they need to fight back.

What it does

CareClaim is an AI-powered assistant that helps users file stronger claims and appeal denied ones.

Users upload policy and claim documents, and the platform analyses them to identify denial reasons, explain coverage in plain English, generate a claim strength score, and produce a complete appeal packet ready for submission.

How we built it

We built CareClaim as a full-stack web app using:

React + TypeScript for the frontend
Supabase for storage and backend functions
Google Gemini API (hackathon track) for document analysis

The system turns unstructured insurance documents into structured insights that power scoring, explanations, and appeal generation.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was ensuring AI outputs were structured and reliable rather than generic text. We also had to simplify complex insurance language while maintaining accuracy, and build a smooth workflow from document upload to actionable results.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a solution that goes beyond a chatbot and delivers a guided workflow that produces real appeal packets. We’re especially proud of building something with meaningful social impact that empowers users to navigate a system that’s usually confusing and inaccessible.

What we learned

We learned that effective AI products focus on outcomes, not just answers. Clear explanations and structured guidance are essential when building tools in high-stakes domains like healthcare.

What's next for CareClaim

Next, we plan to add claim tracking, downloadable appeal packets, and improved document parsing. Our long-term vision is to make CareClaim a trusted platform that helps patients navigate the entire claims process from submission to resolution.
