Inspiration
We were inspired by time-travel thrillers and cyberpunk novels, and we saw an opportunity to merge social engineering, hacking, and storytelling gameplay across generations.
What it does
In Chrononet, players can travel in time, build rapport with AI NPCs, and get system credentials while under coercion, all accompanied by immersive synthwave and ambient soundscapes.
How we built it
We used JavaScript, CSS, and HTML for the game itself, with dynamic sound, dialogue systems, and minigames, and kept state management careful to smoothly shift between eras and modes of play. We utilized Google Gemini to give our NPCs true personalities that the player could talk to and control to build up trust.
Issues we faced
Overcoming trust mechanics balance, preventing minigame bugs after closing the terminal, and smooth audio transitions between screens were the biggest challenges.
Things we're most proud of
We're proudest of our dynamic trust-driven conversation, rock-solid minigame handling, and the engaging audio system bringing all time-periods alive.
Things we learned
We learned how important state management is in interactive games, and how gentle audio and conversation can further engage the player.
What's next for Chrononet
We will be extending to other periods, richer NPC characterizations, side storylines, and more advanced hacking mechanics for even greater replayability.
