Inspiration

As freshmen coming to college, we didn't have any mentors or upperclassmen to guide us as we started this journey. We were confused and didn't know who to turn to for information about clubs, classes, or internships. So we decided to come up with this solution to solve the issues that all freshmen face coming into college.

What it does

The website allows the user to access frequently asked questions from other students who also have been in the same position as them, a freshman with a major in Engineering. The website also has another feature that allows them to chat with other students at UT-Dallas who pursue degrees in Engineering and similar majors. The chat allows freshmen students to ask their upperclassmen questions or advice regarding campus life, courses, and major-related questions anonymously. The anonymous feature allows more students to come forward to ask questions or give answers, as some can be more introverted compared to others.

How we built it

We built this website by using skills such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS. The home page and the FAQ page use HTML and CSS, while the Chat Room uses Javascript, HTML, and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was connecting between students' computers on the portal because that requires the use of networking skills, which were too advanced for us to incorporate. Another challenge was connecting the different components, but in the end, we managed to compile them together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have integrated all of the features of our website seamlessly so it functions.

What we learned

We learned web development skills.

What's next for Chat With US

In the future, we hope to create a separate login portal for freshmen and upperclassmen. We also hope to improve the quality of our chat feature so that there is a main chat feature where any freshman can ask a question and an upperclassman can respond to it. Along with that, we hope to implement a feature that allows upperclassmen and freshmen to directly communicate with one another.
