Inspiration
Roguelike games such as "Hades" and "Enter the Gungeon" served as inspirations for this project
What it does
a top down 2D rogue like game which includes elements such as random room generation and a variety of effects/visuals.
How we built it
The game was built in the Unity Game Engine and we utilized libraries such as Unity's post processing and particle systems to spice up the game's visuals. Eric focused on programming the game whilst Adam helped with ideas and created an awesome soundtrack to go along with it.
Challenges we ran into
Our original plans for this hackathon were MUCH different; we had originally planned on learning React, Firebase, and Node to create a live messenger app that pairs random students from the same high school together to chat. However, we realized that learning all of these frameworks in such a short time was overly ambitious and we decided to scrap our entire project and code a game in Unity instead, which we were much more familiar with. This turn of events resulted in a loss of time of about 1-1.5 hours. Although Unity was much more familiar and we had more experience, we still struggled with implementing random room generation and visuals for "dashing" in game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
finishing the project and making a submission despite our hardships
What we learned
to plan out our ideas better and to not bite off more than we can chew.
What's next for SquareShot
Eric will continue to develop the game, implementing features such as more guns and enemies, a mini map system, power ups, and a boss fight. Afterwards, he will publish the game on itch.io so that it is publicly available for everyone to play.
