Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project came from knowing that college students usually connect with alumni after graduation but why not make use of that network during school. After all, the people around you are your greatest resource. With our application, we are creating a community for students to be able connect with alumni and make use of this network as needed.
What it does
This web application lets college students create a community, help with job searches through referrals, and establish salary transparency about internships.
How we built it
Our tech stack consists of a react and javascript frontend and an Amazon-Dynamodb for the backend, along with a node server. Of course we used github as our source of version control and a lot of coffee 🙂
Challenges we ran into
With most of the technology being new to the team there was a steep learning curve. Additionally we ran into many issues when trying to set up our backend with MongoDb and lost a lot of time. We were able to switch to Dynamo but with little time remaining. Lastly, dynamic rendering was a major portion of the app which we had issues with until the very end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This entire application is something we are very proud of especially since this is the first time doing something like this. Every small obstacle we overcame felt like a win but the biggest would be the breakthrough with our database switch to Dynamo.
What we learned
We learned the importance of planning before developing and having an actual process. We also learned a great deal about the tech stack we used and most importantly we learned how important it is to know when to ask for help.
What's next for Celestial
Future plans for Celestial include growing a forum page where users can connect based on similar interests (similar to subreddits), adding more importance to the salary transparency feature, and lastly adding a networking page to allow for more meaningful connections as well as potential coffee chat opportunities. There is plenty of opportunity for Celestial to grow. We hope to make it out of this world!
