Inspiration
We were originally thinking about a Spanish chatbox, but we thought this would not actually give more resources to the people in need. We ultimately decided that giving a platform for a network of people in the community willing to help was the best solution.
What it does
We have two parts, the app for the network which is targeted at people who want to help, and the physical board that we laser cut. The app provides a platform for the CDCW to connect with those in the community that want to help the migrants with food, housing, clothes, interpreting, legal help, or transportation. The board is geared towards migrants who come in person to the CDCW and want to communicate their needs. There will be 7 boards for the migrants to communicate their needs, transportation, food, clothing, housing, legal, interpreting, and other. Community members can also respond on the board need be.
How we built it
We built the app using a platform called Figma that lets us design the User Interface without coding, so that we can make a mock up of what the app would look like if we made it. The board is lasercut, using the software LightBurn.
Challenges we ran into
Making the app work in the way we wanted it to was a bit of a challenge. Our group didn't have much experience with UI design or working with Figma, so learning how to do all of that in one day was pretty tough.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of what we learned through the process, as well as the final product, and feel it gives users the sense of a community on the app.
What we learned
We learned that making an app even with Figma is more time consuming than we thought, and also that Figma is generally a powerful tool for making interactive mockups of apps and websites.
What's next for CDCW: OurCommunity
The next step would be approval from the CDCW to make the app, and then executing it, while finding community members to join along the way.
