Catch Tracker

Get to know what you’re eating

For Fishackathon II June 7, 2015 Team: Tanmay Patil, Laura Greenwood, Curtis Hart, Zahir Wahid

Problem Statement 15-1

Track aquaculture feed ingredients from the original source to the harvested product. We have developed a tracking methodology for tracking right from the source of the fishing. Created a mobile/web app Identified a plan, schema, and next actions to proceed to get to the ultimate goal of having a chef, or consumers be able to see where the fish he ordered came from and have a comfort level that their seafood is caught appropriately Fulfill the goal of consumer confidence in sustainable seafood management food chain

Today’s Demo

Hardware Device Simulator aboard the ship Initiate CATCH_ID Tracking. When ship returns to port, the CATCH_ID will be closed. Takes continuous images through out the trip. Fish Tracking Inspection

Step 1 – Ship’s Path out to sea and back

Electronic Transponder added to the start up process of a ship which will automatically track key elements of the trip to sea. Transponder Starts a trip which monitors key elements Ship ID, Trip Start Date, Trip End Date, Trip Start Time, Trip End Time, Captain, Crew(m:1), GIS(m:1), Photos(m:1) All ships are registered with their Registration ID (aka Ship ID), Owner Info, Country of origin. Photographic records of the journey will be stored GIS data will be recorded Captain and Crew information will be recorded Once back in port, the system will automatically generate a CATCH_ID which is a composite of key elements required to make the trip unique in database. This key information will be uploaded to the cloud for permanent recording. To keep the “Catch” traceable, the key data will be printed to be placed with the associated “Catch”.

Step 2 - Inspection

The inspection process takes place at the dock. The inspector tags the fish with the CATCH_ID The catch is loaded onto a conveyor belt where it is weighed, visually inspected, and photographed. The inspector reviews the overall Catch and grades the batch, noting any inconsistencies.
In some cases a Lot sample size test is performed. Based on the number of pounds, the sample size would be x. The Sample size chart identifies the passing percentage. For 1000 pounds, sample size could be 10%. If 50% of the 10% fail, the whole lot The inspector or citizen scientists reviews the pictures, marks photos which may be questionable. If a lot fails the passing percentage, the lot is rejected, and forwarded for additional inspection. Inspector grades the Catch A-F

Step 3 - Mercantile

There are a variety of ways the fish or other material are obtained by the Fishmeal Manufacturer. Once the fish or other material is purchased, a certification of the CATCH_ID is provided at time of purchase. The Catch then is moved to the Fishmeal Manufacturer’s facility There may be data elements added to the CATCH_ID based on where it is sold. This still needs some research.

Step 4: Fishmeal Manufacturer Data

Ingredient Table: records, the ingredient, Balance on hand, and CATCH_ID For example: Ingredient: ANCHOVY, Qty on Hand: 1500 LBS, CATCH_ID: BMW12302014364ANCHOVY MENHADEN 1800 LBS BMW12302015012MENHADEN Ingredient Usage: records the use of ingredients. For example: BatchName: NILE TILAPIA PRACTICAL, CHINA Date: 2015115 AMT: 1000, UOM: LBS Recipe Cards: Recipe Cards are generic to the CATCH_ID and store the formula for any given recipe by name of recipe, name of the ingredient, and percent of the feed. Make Batch: This process actually makes the fishmeal product. (See PowerPoint slide)

Step 5: Aquafarm

The Tank Table holds information about what was fed to the various tanks and the FEED_ID associated with the food. The FEED_ID is associated with all ingredients used:

The FEED_ID represents all the certs of the ingredients used in the feed from the Fishmeal Manufacturer… such as:

Sales Table Records the sale to the AquaFarm. When Sold, Certs provided to the purchaser (see Powerpoint slide)

Step 6: Chef Robert’s Restaurant

Receiving Receives Fish and copies of the Certs
Chef Robert Queries the Feed_ID received with product (can choose any or all)
Queries Aquafarm Info
Queries Fishmeal Manufacturer Info
Queries Fisherman Info and Photos
Chef Robert Generates QR Code for Fisherman Info for the customers to review info about the catch and see the photos

The Catch Tracker Business Process

Needs a Stakeholder and a standards body to help review and bring this process to fruition Next Actions Meet with key stakeholders to champion the process Identify what, if any of these parts are already somewhat being done Work with creating the “transponder” hardware which will make the process automatic instead of relying on humans? Evaluate Raspberry-pi appliance Get a leadership team together to evaluate how to build a standard to which leading countries could agree to adhere to Gradually get buy in from smaller fisheries
