Inspiration 💡

The inspiration behind CareerCue came from recognizing the challenges and anxiety many people face when preparing for job interviews. The interview process can be stressful, and many people don't have the resources to know how to best prepare for the questions that may be asked.

CareerCue is made for anyone who is looking to improve their interview skills. This includes beginners entering the workforce for the first time, underprivileged demographics who have limited access to career resources, moms looking to return to their careers after a long break, and people affected by the pandemic who are trying to improve their communication skills.

Ultimately, our goal with the interview helper app is to help individuals land their dream job by offering them the resources and tools they need to succeed in the interview process.

What it does 🏡

CareerCue provides a database of commonly asked behavioural interview questions across various industries. You can practice your responses by recording yourself and getting instant feedback to improve your answers. Our app provides customized feedback so you can see your strengths and weaknesses based on tone, clarity, word choice, and timing.

You can switch questions, restart the recording, try the same question again, and send a summary of your answers and feedback to your email for later review.

How we built it 🌿

We used Figma to design the UX/UI as a collaborative prototyping tool. React.js was used to develop the frontend interface. We leveraged webcam and speech-to-text libraries to record and transcribe user responses. For the backend, we used Flask for the server, Cohere Classify API to analyze the user responses, and SMTP/SSL for the email service.

Challenges we ran into 🔥

The main challenge our team ran into was integrating the frontend and backend. Also, we weren't sure which platform to work on, so we took some time to decide what was the best for our idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of ✔️

  • UX/UI: we based our design choices on the Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design. We used a consistent color scheme and font as well as a color scheme that is color-blind-friendly for protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia. We are also proud of our aesthetic and minimalist design.
  • Cohere API: We were able to successfully integrate the Cohere API into our app, being able to analyze user responses using speech to text tool.

What we learned 🧠

We learned how to integrate Cohere API, speech-to-text library, and how to set up a Flask Server.

What's next for CareerCue 🔮

The next step for CareerCue is refining the feedback functionality to support different response metrics. Also, we want to develop an interview mock experience in which the user can practice with a virtual interviewer.
