CareCart

Inspiration

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare thus making them one of the most vital contributors to our society. A common problem we identified in the nursing field is the common occurrence of burnout. Our inspiration for CareCart came from the desire to ease the burden on nurses by providing an autonomous solution that delivers medication and patient necessities, allowing them to focus more on direct patient care and less on repetitive tasks.

What it does

CareCart is a line-following nurse robot designed to navigate through hospital corridors, delivering medicine, treatments, and other necessities to patients. It reduces response time, assists with routine tasks, and ensures that patient needs are met efficiently and effectively.

How we built it

We built CareCart using a Arduino microcontrollers, line-tracking sensors, and a chassis designed for hospital environments. The robot is equipped with a storage compartment for medicine or other patient necessities, four wheels for stable mobility, and a motion activated compartment opening mechanism. The code was developed using C to control the robot’s navigation and delivery mechanisms.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenges were ensuring the robot’s precise navigation and stability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a line-following system that can navigate complex routes without losing track. Our design also incorporated patient safety features, such as obstacle detection and emergency stops. Seeing CareCart perform successful deliveries without human intervention was a proud moment for our team.

What we learned

We learned a lot about sensor calibration. Most importantly, we overcame unique challenges in healthcare environments and how to create technology to meet these needs effectively.

What's next for CareCart

The next step for CareCart is to add advanced features such as voice recognition and autonomous rerouting to make the robot even more versatile. We also plan to implement a real-time monitoring system so that nurses can track CareCart’s activities remotely. Expanding its use to other healthcare facilities and homes for patient care is another goal for the future.
