Inspiration

We thought of this right when we sat down at the Hackathon after browsing Kaggle for some ideas on what we should approach.

What it does

We envision that a user would be able to set weekly or daily goals on reducing their carbon footprint. The app would have the ability for the user to input what food they ate in a day, miles driven in a vehicle, water usage, etc., and calculate the total carbon emission they released. The app would also send notifications when a user went past their total carbon emission goal and provide tips/alternatives on how to reduce their carbon footprint. The user would also be able to create a profile and add friends, in which they could motivate each other throughout their goals by sharing their goals.

How we built it

Using Figma, sadly the frontend / backend is not finished, but we are proud of our work. In our backend, we used Java and attempted to use SQL to use set data to calculate total emission and example daily inputs from users. We were also going to use TryCarbon API, which calculates CO2 emission. We didn't get to implement it successfully, but came up with a general idea on how to do so.

Challenges we ran into

Database issues on VSCode, one team member was learning Figma

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of attending our first hackathon and going to the workshops. We also learned some valuable coding tips!

What we learned

We learned how to collaborate with a team and work on an idea with a short period of time. Also as this was all of our first hackathon's we got to learn how it is to work in a Hackathon and just have fun creating ideas!

What's next for Carbon Tracker

In the future, we would love to go back and consider learning some more app development and familiarize ourselves with using tools and API's to make our front-end and backend a reality!
