Inspiration

Amidst the current trade war between Canada and the states it has become ever so important to buy Canadian products not only because they are cheaper but because they support our economy.

What it does

Oh Canada! is a browser extension that is able to determine whether a book is made by Canadian authors and if it is not it is able to offer Canadian alternatives which allow you to shop Canadian.

How we built it

In order to build this extension we used google's book api to fetch the ISBN number and author name. This is then fed into gemini which is able to tell us whether the book is Canadian and it is also able to offer Canadian alternatives.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into were utilizing Gemini to offer different alternatives, most issues came from Gemini's accuracy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to deliver a working product with very little web dev and api knowledge prior to this event.

What we learned

We learned how to create a browser extension, implement various api's including that of google Gemini and create a easily navigable UI.

What's next for Oh Canada!

In the future we plan to expand Oh Canada! to other stores like amazon and Walmart. We also plan to offer Canadian alternatives to not only books but any product that can be found in online stores.

My contributions lied in mentoring the new hackers on the foundations of HTML/CSS/JavaScript and developing a QNX application for the Raspberry PI. While my companion focused on integration of Gemini API and Books API, I focused on testing smaller features for the event listeners.

CUHackathon presented a perfect team building and networking event that introduced me with new advances in technology, improved proficiency in devops pipeline (e.g. docker, git), and better adapt to the workflow of diverse contributors.

I contributed to both the back end and front end aspects of our project, focusing primarily on integrating and implementing the Gemini API alongside the Google Books API. This involved creating connections between the APIs to retrieve, process, and display meaningful book related data.

Not only that, I collaborated closely with the front-end team to ensure a smooth and intuitive user experience. This included aligning the API functionality with the HTML structure, troubleshooting integration issues, and providing input on how data should be displayed effectively.

Through this collaborative effort, I gained valuable insights into building cohesive, user-focused applications while refining my technical and teamwork skills!!!
