Inspiration- This didn't start with a whiteboard. It started with a feeling all of us know intimately. Mariia built the first version of CalmStatus because she'd lived the panic — the uncertainty, the not knowing what to do first, whether it's sending an email or talking to a lawyer or broker. Anupriya is living it right now. We didn't research this problem. We are this problem. That's where CalmStatus came from.
What it does- CalmStatus helps immigrants in their most overwhelming moments — visa status ending, unemployment days ticking down, a notice they don't understand, a deadline they might have missed. It cuts through the spiral and gives them three things: validation that their fear is real, clarity on what's known versus unknown, and one safe next step they can take today.
How we built it- We each built our own version first. Four different MVPs, four different takes on the same problem. Then we came together, compared what worked, combined the best ideas from each, and decided what to ship. The result is better than any one of us would have built alone.
Challenges- The hardest question we kept asking ourselves: why is this different from just asking ChatGPT? The answer is focus. CalmStatus isn't a general assistant. It's a structured, emotionally-aware triage and task management tool built specifically for this moment — the panic before the Google search, the overwhelm before the legal consultation. That specificity is the product.
What we're proud of- The collaboration itself. A team of immigrants, co-creating a tool for immigrants, in a single sprint. Support for 10 languages. The structured task flow that works when your brain can't. The design process that kept the user — scared, overwhelmed, possibly alone — at the center of every decision. And the marketplace vision: instant access to a vetted lawyer or counselor, first 15 minutes free, built right into the same screen.
What we learned- Lived experience is a design superpower. In one short sprint, empathy did what months of user research tries to do. We didn't have to imagine the user. We are the user.
What's next- The marketplace. Real humans — immigration lawyers, licensed counselors — available instantly from the same screen. First 15 minutes free, $10 for 30 after that. Accessible to the person working two jobs on an expiring visa. That's where CalmStatus goes next.
