Inspiration
All of our team members were interested in game development, and we wanted to work with a whole new environment. We also wanted to create a game with interactivity and engagement.
What it does
We built an interactive game that allowed players to interact with characters in a meaningful way. The game also has more than one branching path, and so not all of it can be experienced with one playthrough.
How we built it
We built the game in a pure HTML/CSS/JavaScript environment. We used custom, team-made assets for all parts of the UI and design.
Challenges we ran into
None of us on the team had any experience with the environment we had decided to design our game in, so a large challenge from the very beginning was figuring out how to use the tools we had. In addition, we had a lot of challenges with how we managed custom assets throughout the entire project and employed efficient and effective flow of control.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all extremely proud of the final product. We went from not knowing a thing about the languages we were coding in to a finished demo of a product. We're also proud of how we were able to only use homemade components.
What we learned
Most notably, we learned how to develop a simple web application in a pure HTML/CSS/JavaScript environment. We also learned many important organizational strategies, such as how to effectively delegate tasks and handle time.
What's next for Byte University: The Dating Sim
We have a lot planned for the game. Since the majority of our time was actually spent on figuring out how to get the game initially set up, we feel we will have a lot of freedom now to add a wider cast of characters and a developed story with multiple different branching paths and different endings. Certainly, there will be more to be seen from Byte University.
