Inspiration
We’ve all made non-financially sound purchasing decisions before, so we created “BuyItBuddy!”. Saving money used to be stressful, but with this tool you know exactly how much to save and have your very own plan laid out for you.
What it does
"BuyItBuddy!" is a user-friendly website that helps consumers make informed decisions about their purchases. Simply input your income, monthly expenses, item cost, and desired time frame, and our website will determine whether you can afford to make a purchase now or if you need to save money first.
Users input their income and expenses, which is then calculated to how much money they can afford to spend. If the user cannot afford the item at their current income and expenses, the website tells users how much money they need to save each month in order to buy the item within their desired time frame.
If the user is unable to save the recommended amount each month, the website gives alternative options such as reducing the time frame or looking for alternative products that are more affordable.
Overall, "BuyItBuddy" is an essential tool for anyone looking to make smart financial decisions about a purchase. With its easy-to-use interface and personalized savings plan, users can feel confident and informed when making their next purchase.
How we built it
We used javascript for the backend and HTML & CSS for the frontend on React.
Challenges we ran into
We aren’t used to a time frame limiting our project, so we had to redact a lot of more complex ideas we had planned for “BuyItBuddy!”.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a functioning prototype to submit, because we weren’t sure if it would actually be usable with the time frame given. The UI also looks clean and is easy to use.
What we learned
For some of us, this was our first hackathon, so we learned what to expect in future hackathons. We brushed up on React JS and learned some HTML & CSS for the frontend as well.
What's next for BuyItBuddy!
We are hoping to improve the UI and make it cleaner. We also want to add a savings bar that keeps track of how much you’ve saved so far and the time left till you reach your goal.
