Inspiration
Our team was inspired to create a sustainability solution for the city of Miami. One of their goals is to increase use of alternative transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the city which happens to be one of the worst in the country! However, locals are reluctant to use their bus system due to long wait times, unreliability, and ghost buses.
So in our ideation, we wanted to ask two big questions: How can we regain the locals trust in the public transportation system? And how can we make it attractive?
What it does
Buszy is a mobile application that provides a community-focused transit tracker in real time by incentivizing user participation through rewards. When a user checks in at the first stop of their route, they automatically notify others if the bus is on time or not. When a user checks out at the last stop of their route, they're award for their participation - a free coffee or coupon from the bus stop's nearest cafe - further enriching community connections.
How we built it
We created high-fidelity clickable prototypes on Figma to convey the user flow and features, then we uploaded our designs to Bravo to create a mobile app.
Challenges we ran into
Developers: We had limited experience with frontend development, but were able to create a powerful prototype using Figma. The biggest challenge was finding a way to go from the Figma prototype to a reactive mobile app. Eventually, we found a helpful tool, Bravo, but the learning curve was a bit too steep for the remaining time.
Designers: This was the first hackathon for majority of the members and we had to battle the constant self-imposed feature creep. Even by Saturday night, we were discussing how we can scope it down to be able to deliver our app's core value by the deadline.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were working in three different timezones, one internationally, but we were able to find a collaborative flow, take turns working on our shared files(Figma, Google Doc) and recapping each other on what has been done and next steps.
We were also able to pivot to a solution last minute to deliver a demo.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Google Maps APIs, even though we weren't able to use it in our final submission. We also learned about Figma interactions and collaborative tools like Glitch. We discovered Bravo, which is a tool that allows you to upload Figma designs/layouts and quickly create a mobile app.
What's next for Buszy
The next step for Buszy would be to 'Bravorize' our Figma designs to get our core functionality working as part of a mobile application that we could test and iterate on.
