Inspiration
Dario once said "I hate it when I want to direct someone on campus, but I'm not able to explain the buses routes as it is complicated for someone that is not familiar wit it." When student services were first moved to White Creek, people were unsure how to get there and specially those with mobility issues. If you had been able to type the building you wanted to go to, it would had made it easier to access such a vital resource.
What it does
This web application, Bus for All, will take your location and will direct to the closest bus stop. The algorithm will choose a route with the shortest walking distance regardless of transit time.
- Color Blindness - app does not rely on colors
- Mobility - Shortest distance for wheelchairs
How we built it
The application utilizes Javascript (i.e. Google Maps JavaScript API), AJAX, HTML5, and Bootstrap.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge encountered was parsing the bus routes longitude and latitude coordinates from the server response.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Bus for All is a functional proof of concept that realizes the main goals of the project.
What we learned
The takeaways while developing this project is that accessibility should be an intrinsic part of the technology we create and enable. Unless accessible design and technology has been part of your education, it's difficult to appreciate the difficulties experienced by users that need such technology.
