Inspiration
The financial landscape in the US in 2025 has been difficult. From rising inflation, unpredictable stock markets, ongoing tariff tensions, and a challenging job market, staying on top of your finances is more important than ever. This is especially relevant for college students, who are navigating a major transition — taking on new expenses, managing loans, entering the workforce, and building financial independence for the first time. Budgeteer helps you take control with smart insights, adaptive budgeting, and personalized guidance, empowering you to navigate financial uncertainty with confidence and build a strong foundation for your future.
What it does
We designed Budgeteer not just to track finances, but to think and adapt like a personal financial coach. Budgeteer tracks user statistics such as statement activity, financial accounts, loans, and custom-set budgets to easily manage your finances at a glance. Our lightweight decision intelligence model suggests smart budget actions and gets smarter with every piece of user feedback, personalizing the experience over time. It provides clear, real-time visibility into your spending, savings, and debt, offering personalized insights that guide you toward your goals and answers questions to help you build a deeper understanding of your financial situation.
How we built it
We built Budgeteer in React with the help of ShadCN component library and Chart.js to visualize user metrics. For personalized AI insights, we pair run llama3 via ollama.
Challenges we ran into
LLMs can be tricky to work with. Context windows can be very short on small models, which causes them to forget earlier instructions. It's important to only provide as much context as necessary to reduce overloading the model and reducing the usefulness of its output.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're extremely happy with how Budgeteer turned out, and we're especially proud of how we integrated AI to deliver personalized financial advice in a way that's clear, actionable, and easy for users to digest. By incorporating decision intelligence into our lightweight model, Budgeteer learns and adapts based on user feedback over time. With each interaction, Budgeteer becomes smarter and more personalized, helping users stay even more in control of their financial journey. We’re excited not just about the final product, but also about the concept and the strong foundation we built for future growth.
What we learned
Throughout this journey, we learned the importance of meeting users where they are financially and emotionally. Building tools that feel empowering — not intimidating — is key to creating trust. We also deepened our technical skills in frontend performance optimization, real-time data visualization, and integrating AI models smoothly into everyday applications.
What's next for Budgeteer
We plan to expand Budgeteer’s features to include goal-based saving plans and predictive financial modeling. We hope to make sure Budgeteer grows into a tool that truly helps people thrive financially.
