Inspiration
Our inspiration for Budget Buddies comes from our drive to educate the youth on important topics such as finance and budgeting. There was a lack of this knowledge when we were younger therefore we believe it is critical to provide our future leaders of society with useful knowledge that Budget Buddies teaches.
What it does
Budget Buddies is a platform that provides youth with a spot to create fun characters, learn by answering trivia questions, and play games to earn credits. The overall goal of the app is to teach about the importance of budgeting and saving while also making it fun at the same time. Each time a user saves their own money they earn a credit in the app/website. The credits are used to buy exciting and engaging accessories for their character while learning how to save properly to meet real life goals. By answering trivia questions, games will be unlocked to allow for the game to stay exciting and relevant.
How we built it
Our team first brainstormed ideas relevant to financial literacy and educational technology, two topics we were all passionate about. To make the hack fun and appeal to a younger audience, we decided to create a platform that supports learning through mini games while teaching the user to manage their money responsibly. To reach a broader audience, we created both a web application, using HTML and CSS, and a mockup of a mobile app using Figma. The two mini games were created using python along with pygame.
Challenges we ran into
While coding the games on pygame we encountered a bug where the sprites would not appear on the screen. After doing lots of research online and trying to figure out where the error was we figured out the required code to fix this bug. Debugging is often frustrating especially when you are not sure where the error came. Although, now that we have overcome this challenge we learnt to have a longer patience and to be graceful under pressure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating both a web application and mobile app mockup that includes all the Budget Buddy features. In addition, we were able to incorporate both game design, UI/UX design, and web app development with a focus on teaching teenagers the importance of budgeting.
What we learned
Our team learned to use a variety of tools such as pygames, bootstrap, and figma. We also had the unique opportunity to apply the skills we learned throughout the hackathon, such as attending the design and prototype workshop, to our hack.
What's next for Budget Buddies
Budget Buddies hopes to get feedback from users and create an app so that people can use its great features from anywhere. Along with the implementation of the app, producing a piggy bank is something that strongly correlates with what our mission is. By creating and selling a piggy bank that counts the users money as it is put within it and translates it to credits within the game, it’ll take Budget Buddies to the next level. This would also allow for Budget Buddies to potentially become feasible in the future as well.
