Inspiration

Walking around campus, we saw many misuses of trash cans which were obvious environmentally damaging.

What it does

Creates an integrated network of smart trash cans that show trash levels and prevent improper trash disposal.

How we built it

ESP32 microcontroller that collects data from a distance sensor and load cells; displays data using OLED panel; integrated network powered by a web-app.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting hardware with software.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Fully functional prototype, complete with school spirit.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate multiple sensors and inputs in a single micro-controller based device.

What's next for Bruin Bins

Further integration and expansion of hardware and software systems to be more robust and user-friendly.

Created by

Implemented the OLED display functionality to the project, tested and bug-fixed load cells and sonar sensors. Soldered electrical components and designed physical mechanisms on the device.

Henry Shu
Designed the solenoid locking mechanism, tested and debugged the sonar distance sensor calculations, and implemented Wi-Fi integration using the ESP32 dev module.

Current Computer Engineering student at UCLA with an interest in embedded programming, digital design, and computer vision.
I implemented the load cells and the distance sensor. I worked on the magnetic switch to turn on the solenoid lock. I did most of the soldering.
