Inspiration

We are inspired by our and our friends’ experiences, where we lack access to information and role models. We were unaware of what it was like outside our world. We never even thought about studying abroad before. Our dreams were only limited to the role models around us, which limited our expectations of the world. The scary part is, we didn’t know that we didn’t know things. Through BrightBestie, our mission is to expand the horizons of knowledge and provide access to information for students in Indonesia, especially those from underserved and low-income communities. We strive to create a supportive environment where users can empower each other, breaking down barriers and opening doors to a world of opportunities.

What it does

  1. ConsultBuddy.AI: Plan your career and education with personalized insights from your AI consultant friend! ConsultBuddy empowers students, especially from underserved communities, with tailored career and education plans, and job opportunities, that align with their interests and aspirations, even possibly ones they may not have thought of before. Students from underserved communities may be first-generation students who have no one to ask for guidance. With ConsultBuddy.AI, we are creating an environment where everyone can compete with equal access to information.
  2. Tracker Pal: Achieve measurable targets and receive AI-generated feedback, based on the evaluation of your work, to get the most out of it. With Tracker Pal, students from underserved communities will gain the same level of access as those with private tutors, creating a level playing field.
  3. Super Bestie: Getting acquainted with new role models will expand your knowledge and build valuable networks. We foster a positive community where users support each other. It will be especially useful for first-generation students seeking mentors. Students who have participated in Super Bestie in the past are encouraged to become Super Besties themselves, growing a pool of role models to inspire many more students in the future.
  4. Articles: Get updated with the latest scholarship opportunities in Indonesia and abroad. Through these articles, we aim to inspire students to pursue scholarships, unlocking new educational possibilities both locally and internationally.

How we built it

We built our web with the React library, TypeScript programming language, and Tailwind styling framework. We also use OpenAI APIs to serve as the chatbot. With the skills and knowledge we gained from school, we carried out a structured division of tasks to develop high-quality software to solve the problems we had in the past.

Challenges we ran into

Creating an AI prompt capable of producing consistent outputs that meet our high expectations and standards is quite difficult. We have to spend around 30% of the development time testing our AI to the point when we are satisfied with the results.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

In a relatively short time of 36 hours, we successfully developed a high-quality software prototype with many features to overcome the problems that we and the underprivileged community face, namely ConsultBuddy, Tracker Pal, and Super Bestie.

What we learned

We learned how to craft a good prompt. We didn't expect that creating a quality prompt would not only require a lot of thinking but also trial and error. Besides, we also learned that teamwork is essential to bring to life the solutions to the problems we face.

What’s next for BrightBestie

We hope that our project can be further developed with the support from the government, mainly to further increase access to information, especially to the underprivileged communities. With their help, developing applications at scale such that more and more users access our applications is achievable.
