Inspiration

Covid has made it nearly impossible to meet up with friends. We wanted to give back the opportunity for people to gather and have a good time together in a virtual space that feels like a physical one.

What it does

A host creates a room layout for their virtual space, selecting activities for guests to participate in for each room. People within a room can communicate through text and voice chat while taking part in a shared activity, be it watching a broadcast, playing a game, or simply hanging out.

How we built it

We built a website to host our service using a combination of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We also leveraged Dolby.io Interactivity API to handle the voice chat and broadcasting elements of our app.

Challenges we ran into

Besides the classic time limitation inherent to the hackathon format, we ran into difficulties in leveraging some of JavaScript's features due to our relative inexperience with the language.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have successfully used the Dolby.io Interactivity API. We are also happy with the overall progress we've made. This was a great learning experience for us that we might not have had the chance to go through were in not for this event.

What we learned

More than can be put into words here. Some of the highlights are that we learned many intricacies of the way HTML pages and their JavaScript elements interact. We also learned how to utilize the Dolby.io Interactivity API.

What's next for Brick Party

Our ambitions for this hackathon probably surpassed our actual capabilities given the time frame. In the end, we could not implement the dynamic room creation tools we first envisioned. Once the event is over, we will aim to polish the experience and implement the missing features for our app.
