Inspiration

When reflecting on the challenges our team faces in managing our well-being, we discovered that many of us struggle with doomscrolling. Additionally, we often bypass the app timers intended to help reduce our screen time. This issue seems to be widespread, with the average UK citizen spending over four hours a day scrolling through negative content.

What it does

BreadWinner aims to provide an effective, enjoyable way of not only decreasing your screen time, but improving your wellbeing in the long term. BreadWinner is gamified, and the user is incentivised to achieve their screen time goals through caring for a virtual pet character, a sentient loaf of bread. The bread’s health is tied to screen time use through the app tracking screen time spent in certain apps, but can be replenished through positive reinforcement - this can include completing tasks.

How we built it

.We created wireframes for several UI on the page using Figma. We created a minimal viable product for the app, creating several user flows through the app, transforming our designs to use Swift UI. We also built a recommender system using React Naive to suggest activities a user could do in the local area instead of doom scrolling.

Challenges we ran into

At first, we struggled to find an approach that would prevent users from overusing the app without being too harsh when they didn’t meet their goals, as we were concerned about the potential negative impact on their mental health. We decided to focus on positive reinforcement, offering rewards like cinema vouchers at the end of the month for users who meet their goals, rather than penalizing them by restricting access to the app for overuse.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we managed to create a minimal viable product of a recommended system in React Native which is able find local activities which you can do in your local area, in attempt to prevent you from doomscrolling. We are also proud that we gained experienced of using prototyping tools such as Figma.

What we learned

We learnt about structured design thinking and about how to think about a problem so it would have the intended impact on our target audience. We also developed skills in prototyping and in using different API such as the Google Maps and Google Places API,

What's next for BreadWinner

We plan to use the EventBrite API or the TicketMaster API, to allow our recommender system to also suggest current events which the user can take part in instead of doom scrolling.
