Inspiration

We were inspired by a game called One-Handed Chef, where you make food with only one hand. We wanted something silly like this, but in VR. We all liked the idea of a baking simulator, but wanted to add more pressure than simply baking a cake. Because of this, we added a time limit with the possibility of an explosion.

What it does

In this game, you are racing against time to put ingredients in a bowl. With the right ingredients in the mixing bowl, the ingredients transformed into batter, which can be transferred to a cake pan. When placed into the oven, a cake is created. Once the finished cake is set on the cake stand, the timer stops, and a celebration ensues. Fail to set the cake on the cake stand within the time limit, and the kitchen disappears, and you are blown up.

How we built it

We utilized Unity for the game engine and Blender for custom modeling. We split our team to work on different scenes, and successfully merged on GitHub.

Challenges we ran into

Half of our team never worked with VR before this weekend, so learning how to use the engine was a challenge in and of itself. After getting the basics down, a major issue we ran into was merge conflicts in GitHub. In Unity, the door hinges and colliders proved to be quite the task, and in Blender baking textures to look correct in the game engine was another challenge to overcome.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of our scripting, which creates batter from individual ingredients. In addition to this, over half of our models in the game were created by our team in Blender.

What we learned

We learned so many things from creating this game, including both hard and soft skills. Learning how to use Unity was the hard skill we developed, and the time management and teamwork skills we gained from this experience were the soft skills we developed.

What's next for BoominBatter

There are some design elements that we still wish to add to the kitchen that time constraints did not allow. For example, we think it would be funny to add a giant red button, and when pressed, the kitchen explodes. There are also some minor bugs that we would like to resolve.
