The Story of Shake It Up
When we started brainstorming for this Hackathon, we wanted to make something that would be fun - both for us and the users. One of the team members has worked at a bar for the past year and learned a lot about cocktails and the experience that comes with each one. However with the current pandemic, a lot of people can't spend Friday nights at a bar or club, so we want them to be able to have that experience at home. Making it simple to find cocktails, with a clear ingredients list and instructions, anyone can enjoy a piña colada or Irish coffee anytime (hopefully after 5 pm). And of course, there are non-alcoholic options too, which are indicated clearly on each cocktail's page.
As for the creation of our project, it was not without hiccups. While one started with the Frontend in Bootstrap Studio, the other figured out how to use the API with Ruby on Rails. After that, we connected the two pieces and discussed the next steps. One major challenge was efficiently passing instance variables between controllers but the wisdom of the internet helped us out. We learned to collaborate effectively and take constructive feedback from each other. We also learned new technologies we didn't know about earlier such as Bootstrap studio, Heroku, and Domain.com. Creating this Shake It Up has been undoubtedly fun but an amazing learning experience.
(We registered shakeitup.tech on Domain.com however it took too long to create the correct DNS records so the domain cannot be seen in the video)
