Inspiration
This unique year, many people have faced unprecedented challenges, such as losing their sense of time given the novel work-from-home lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having experienced this issue firsthand, we attempted to create an app to help combat the ‘productivity loss’ that many people were facing.
What it does
The app enables users to record the time spent on different activities from the preset categories, and then reflect on their week in relation to the number of hours they had targeted to spend. They can then review how their time is being spent and how they can improve on their time management/productivity.
How we built it
We used Intellij as our IDE, and developed the app in Java. To design our GUI, we implemented Java Swing components.
Challenges we ran into
We are all in different time zones and it was our first time doing a project remotely. We also had difficulty translating the IntelliJ GUI into code. The code wouldn’t generate on it’s own which create a cascade of issues for project completion
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We created the foundations for an application, despite little to no experience with programming and hackathons in general, as this is our first hackathon.
What we learned
From a resource perspective, we learned how to implement a GUI using java through the Swing libraries. As a self-driven project, this forced us to find ways online to do a lot of work. Most importantly, we gained exposure to the atmosphere of a hackathon, and this will be invaluable for our future endeavors.
What's next for BoilerTime
Users can compare their statistics with other users of the app if they wish to. Users can choose their colours for the categories or change the colors we chose. Users can add their own customized categories or modify the names of existing categories. We would also like to implement Google Calendar API Integration. Notification if there’s a drastic difference in the average percentages for the user. Awards system to motivate users to meet their goals
