Inspiration

Moving around your house or apartment shouldn't tear you away from your favorite music. We wanted a way to let your favorite songs follow you without blasting music so loud that the whole block can hear it.

What it does

BluZone uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Arduino microcontrollers to sense where you are within your home. Your phone is in constant communication with the BluZone beacons placed in each room, determining each distance based on the connection's strength. After determining which beacon is closest, your phone sends a signal to the beacon telling it to turn up the volume while the other beacons are muted.

How we built it

Each beacon consists of an Arduino along with an Bluefruit Bluetooth adapter for communication. The Arduino is connected to an LED and speaker to provide visual and audio connectivity cues. The iOS app was written using Swift and made use of Adafruits open-source Bluetooth control app.

What's next for BluZone

  • Compact, wall-mountable case for each BluZone beacon
  • Connecting other home devices, such as lamps and thermostats
  • Multiple simultaneous users whose music, lighting, and temperature all vary
